Botox vs Dysport vs Jeuveau: What You Actually Need to Know
Three brand names. One active ingredient. Our RN injectors break down the facts so you can stop overthinking and start treating.
There are three FDA-approved neurotoxins for cosmetic wrinkle treatment: Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau. At Call of Beauty in Encinitas, we carry all three.
The honest answer to "which one is best?" is that none of them is better than the others. They all use botulinum toxin type A. They all relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. They all last about the same amount of time. And when you do the math, they all cost about the same per treatment.
The choice comes down to personal preference and how your body responds. Some patients try one and stick with it. Others rotate between all three. Here's what we tell people who want the facts without the marketing spin.
How Neurotoxins Work
All three products, Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau, are injectable neurotoxins made from botulinum toxin type A. That's a purified protein that temporarily blocks the nerve signals telling certain facial muscles to contract.
When those muscles relax, the wrinkles they create (forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet) smooth out. The effect is temporary, typically lasting 3-4 months before the nerve signals gradually return and you're due for another treatment.
Think of it like three brands of ibuprofen. Advil, Motrin, and a generic all contain the same active ingredient. They're manufactured differently and some people swear one works better for them. Same principle here.
One Active Ingredient, Three Brand Names
All three neurotoxins are delivered the same way: a series of small injections using ultra-fine needles. The appointment takes 15-30 minutes, there's no downtime, and results develop over the following days. The treatment experience is virtually identical regardless of which product your injector uses.
Botox (Allergan)
FDA-approved in 2002. The original cosmetic neurotoxin with the longest track record. Made by Allergan. OnabotulinumtoxinA.
Dysport (Galderma)
FDA-approved in 2009. Smaller molecule size means it spreads wider from each injection point. Made by Galderma. AbobotulinumtoxinA.
Jeuveau (Evolus)
FDA-approved in 2019. The newest option, built exclusively for cosmetic use with Hi-Pure technology. Made by Evolus. PrabotulinumtoxinA.
The Facts: Dose, Duration, and Onset
Here's what actually differs between the three, and what stays the same.
| Feature | Botox Allergan | Dysport Galderma | Jeuveau Evolus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active Ingredient | Botulinum toxin type A (onabotulinumtoxinA) | Botulinum toxin type A (abobotulinumtoxinA) | Botulinum toxin type A (prabotulinumtoxinA) |
| FDA Approved | 2002 | 2009 | 2019 |
| How Fast It Works | 3-5 days, peak at 10-14 days | 2-3 days, peak at 5-7 days | 3-5 days, peak at 10-14 days |
| How Long It Lasts | 3-4 months | 3-4 months | 3-4 months |
| Typical Units (Full Upper Face) | 30-50 units | 90-150 units (3:1 ratio to Botox) | 30-50 units |
| Spread Pattern | Stays close to injection site | Diffuses wider from injection point | Precise placement, similar to Botox |
| Price at Call of Beauty | $13/unit (regular), $11 (member), $10 (first visit) | $4.33/unit (regular), $3.70 (member), $3.33 (first visit) | $13/unit (regular), $11 (member), $10 (first visit) |
Two things jump out from that table.
Duration is the same across the board. All three neurotoxins last 3-4 months for the vast majority of patients. Individual factors like metabolism, muscle strength, and treatment consistency affect longevity, but the product itself isn't the variable.
Dysport uses more units but costs less per unit. Dysport's dosing runs at roughly a 3:1 ratio compared to Botox and Jeuveau. So where you'd need 40 units of Botox, you'd need about 120 units of Dysport. But at $4.33/unit versus $13/unit, the total treatment price lands in the same range.
The Pricing Math
None of Them Is Better Than the Others
This is the part most blogs won't tell you: clinical outcomes are comparable across all three neurotoxins. Published studies show similar efficacy and safety profiles. The FDA approved each of them for the same primary indication (glabellar lines), and injectors use all three across the same treatment areas.
The differences are real but subtle:
- Dysport kicks in faster (2-3 days vs 3-5 days for Botox and Jeuveau). If you have an event this weekend, that matters.
- Dysport spreads wider, which can be an advantage for large flat areas like the forehead and a disadvantage near delicate structures like the eyelid.
- Jeuveau was designed exclusively for cosmetic use, while Botox has therapeutic applications (migraines, hyperhidrosis, TMJ). That doesn't affect your wrinkle treatment results.
- Botox has the longest track record, with over 20 years of cosmetic use data. Some patients find that reassuring.
None of these differences makes one product objectively superior. They're trade-offs, and your injector can help you weigh them based on your face, your goals, and your schedule.
Forehead Lines: Before and After Neurotoxin
Forehead lines are the most common treatment area for all three neurotoxins. Whether your injector uses Botox, Dysport, or Jeuveau, the goal is the same: relax the frontalis muscle enough to smooth horizontal lines while keeping natural movement and expression.
Results like these are typical regardless of which product is used. The skill of your injector matters far more than the brand name on the vial.
How to Choose: It's About Preference
At Call of Beauty, here's how we help patients decide.
If you've never had a neurotoxin before: Any of the three is a fine starting point. Your injector will recommend one based on your treatment areas and timeline. Many first-time patients start with Botox or Jeuveau because the dosing is straightforward, then try Dysport later if they're curious.
If you've been getting one product and it's working: Keep going. There's no reason to switch from something that gives you good results.
If your results have been inconsistent or fading early: Try a different neurotoxin. Bodies respond differently to each formulation. Some patients who felt Botox wore off too quickly find that Dysport or Jeuveau holds better for them, and vice versa.
If you want faster onset: Dysport's 2-3 day onset is real. For events with a short timeline, it's a practical advantage.
If you want to try the newest option: Jeuveau's Hi-Pure technology and cosmetic-only focus appeal to patients who like being on the leading edge.
The Best Way to Find Your Neurotoxin
Can You Switch Between Them?
Yes. There's no medical issue with getting Botox one visit, Dysport the next, and Jeuveau after that. Some patients rotate intentionally. Others find their favorite and stay loyal.
The only guideline: wait until your current treatment wears off before your next session. That's the standard 3-4 month interval you'd follow regardless of which product you use.
You can also mix products in a single visit. Some patients get one neurotoxin on their forehead and a different one on their crow's feet. Your injector can customize the approach based on what each area needs.

Crow's Feet: Same Results Across All Three
Crow's feet respond well to all three neurotoxins. Some injectors prefer Botox or Jeuveau here because they stay closer to the injection site, but Dysport works well too when dosed appropriately. Your injector will choose based on your anatomy and what they've seen work best in your specific case.
These results are achievable with any of the three products. Consistent treatments every 3-4 months maintain the smoothing effect and can even improve results over time.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
The treatment experience is nearly identical for all three neurotoxins.
Your injector cleans the treatment areas, marks injection points based on your facial anatomy, and uses ultra-fine needles to deliver the product in precise micro-doses. Most patients describe it as a series of small pinches. The whole appointment takes 15-30 minutes.
There's no downtime. You can go back to work, run errands, or continue your day immediately. We recommend avoiding heavy exercise, hot yoga, saunas, and lying flat for about 4 hours after treatment.
Results appear within 2-5 days depending on the product, with full effect at 10-14 days. We offer a complimentary follow-up at the 2-week mark to check your results and make any refinements.
