An IPL treatment uses filtered pulses of light to fade sun spots, freckles, redness and broken capillaries in one treatment. We perform it on the Lumenis Stellar M22 at our Encinitas med spa.
Brown spots darken, then flake away over about a week.

Sun spots (solar lentigines) are clumps of pigment left behind by years of UV exposure. IPL light is absorbed by that pigment, which heats it and brings it to the surface. Over the next several days the spots look darker, like coffee grounds, and then flake off. A 2025 systematic review reported good-to-excellent IPL results in roughly 75% of facial sun-spot cases and up to 90% on the hands, with a lower risk of rebound darkening than several laser options.

The American Academy of Dermatology lists IPL as a rosacea treatment that can reduce flushing and improve skin texture, noting that it is gentler than a laser but takes more sessions. The Stellar M22 has a dedicated vascular filter for this. In a 2024 randomized trial in patients with redness-type rosacea, the M22's 590 and vascular filters performed comparably to a pulsed dye laser. IPL controls redness but does not cure rosacea, so maintenance is part of the plan.

Small red vessels on the nose and cheeks fade after treatment.

Facial telangiectasias, the fine red lines around the nose and cheeks, absorb the light through the hemoglobin they carry. The vessel is heated and gradually reabsorbed by the body. Fine vessels often respond in one or two sessions, while larger or deeper vessels may need more.

Treats the sun damage that faces get credit for hiding.

The red-brown, mottled pattern on the sides of the neck and the V of the chest has a name: poikiloderma of Civatte. It is one of the conditions the Stellar M22 is FDA-cleared to treat, and in a study of 135 patients most saw more than 75% clearance. The backs of the hands respond well too. Body skin heals more slowly than facial skin, so we treat it more conservatively.

An IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment, sometimes called an IPL photofacial, is an in-office light treatment that fades sun spots, freckles, redness and broken capillaries. Unlike a laser, which emits one wavelength, IPL delivers a filtered range of light that is absorbed by both brown pigment and the blood in small vessels. At Call of Beauty in Encinitas we perform IPL on the Lumenis Stellar M22, starting at $500 for the face, with most patients planning a series of three sessions about a month apart.

Years of North County sun leave two kinds of marks: brown spots and freckles that cluster on the cheeks, temples and hands, and a red, flushed look from small vessels that widen over time. Most treatments handle one or the other. IPL handles both in the same appointment, because the light it emits is absorbed by melanin in pigment and by hemoglobin in blood vessels.
The result is a clearer, more even complexion rather than a resurfaced one. IPL doesn't remove the top layer of skin, so most patients go back to work the same day. The tradeoff is that it works in stages: each session lightens what is there, and a series of three gets most people where they want to be.
Reserve an IPL package before October 14, 2026 and take an additional 10% off: the 3-session face package drops to $1,080, and the 3-session face and neck package (chest included free) drops to $1,755. Treatments can be scheduled later in the season.
IPL works by selective photothermolysis: light of a particular color is absorbed by a particular target, heats it, and leaves the surrounding skin largely untouched. A flash of IPL contains many wavelengths at once. A filter placed in front of the light guide cuts off the shorter wavelengths, and choosing that filter is how the treatment is aimed. Shorter cut-offs reach superficial brown pigment. Longer ones penetrate deeper and are safer on skin with more natural pigment.
That is why the device matters. The Lumenis Stellar M22 is a multi-application platform from Lumenis, the company whose predecessor brought the first IPL to market in the 1990s. Its IPL handpiece carries nine filters, and the provider changes them during a session as the target changes. A typical face treatment uses a shorter filter on sun spots and the vascular filter across the nose and cheeks.
| Feature | Stellar M22 filter | What it is used for |
|---|---|---|
| 515 and 560 nm | Cut-off filters that pass light from 515 or 560 nm upward | Superficial brown pigment such as sun spots and freckles on fair skin |
| 590 and 615 nm | Mid-range cut-off filters | Diffuse redness and fine vessels, and pigment on slightly deeper skin tones |
| 640, 695 and 755 nm | Longer cut-off filters that penetrate deeper | Deeper vessels, and a more conservative option for darker skin types |
| Vascular (530-650 + 900-1200 nm) | Dual-band filter that concentrates energy where hemoglobin absorbs | Rosacea redness, flushing and broken capillaries |
| Acne (400-600 + 800-1200 nm) | Dual-band filter | Mild to moderate inflammatory acne, an FDA-cleared indication |
Two Lumenis technologies shape how each pulse is delivered. Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT) keeps the energy level flat across the length of the pulse instead of spiking at the start, and SapphireCool light guides chill the skin at the point of contact. The Stellar M22 is FDA-cleared (510(k) K250809) for benign pigmented lesions, vascular lesions including the redness of rosacea and poikiloderma of Civatte, and inflammatory acne, among other uses.
The platform has peer-reviewed data of its own. In a 2024 randomized trial of 60 patients with redness-type rosacea, the M22's 590 nm and vascular filters reduced redness about as well as a pulsed dye laser over four sessions. Blistering was more common with the vascular filter than in the other groups, which is why we test spots and adjust settings rather than treating at the maximum.
Melasma. Blotchy, soft-edged patches that match on both cheeks, the forehead or upper lip are usually melasma, not sun spots. The European Society for Laser Dermatology's position statement calls IPL very effective for sun spots but says it should be used "with great caution" for melasma. Many people have both: melasma across the cheeks and ordinary sun spots on the temples. In that case we treat each area differently, and LaseMD takes the melasma. Our guide to telling sun spots from melasma walks through the differences.
Tanned skin. IPL can't tell the pigment in a sun spot from the pigment in a tan. Tanned skin absorbs energy meant for the spot, which raises the risk of burns and blotchy darkening. If you arrive with fresh color, we reschedule. This is also why fall and winter are the easiest seasons to start a series.
Deeper skin tones. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that darker skin is more prone to burns and dark marks after light and laser treatment. IPL works best on fair to medium skin (Fitzpatrick types I-III). Type IV is a case-by-case decision with conservative filters, and for types V-VI we recommend LaseMD, which targets water instead of pigment.
Spots that are raised, changing or irregular. IPL treats benign pigment only. A spot that is growing, bleeding, raised or unusual in color should be seen by a dermatologist before any cosmetic treatment.
Faces get sunscreen; necks and chests usually don't. The photo shows the typical pattern: scattered brown spots mixed with fine red vessels on the sides of the neck and the V of the chest. Dermatologists call it poikiloderma of Civatte, and it is one of the conditions the Stellar M22 is FDA-cleared to treat.
Because IPL treats brown and red together, it suits this pattern better than a pigment-only or vessel-only treatment. In a study of 135 patients treated with IPL for neck and chest poikiloderma, most saw more than 75% clearance. The backs of the hands respond well too.
Body skin heals more slowly than facial skin, so we use more conservative settings and expect the full series. The Face + Neck package includes the chest free for exactly this reason.
We confirm your skin type, check for a tan, review medications and sort sun spots from melasma. Areas that aren't a fit for IPL get a different plan.
Your skin is cleansed, a thin layer of cool gel is applied, and you put on protective eyewear. Most patients don't need numbing cream.
The chilled light guide is pressed to the skin and pulsed in rows across the area. Filters change as the target changes. A face takes about 20 minutes; neck, chest or body areas add time.
Redness settles within hours to two days. Brown spots darken and flake off over 7-10 days. Your next session is booked about four weeks out.
| Feature | What you'll notice |
|---|---|
| Treatment day | Pink and warm, like a mild sunburn. Makeup is fine the next morning. |
| Days 1-2 | Redness fades. Brown spots begin to look darker and slightly raised. |
| Days 3-7 | Darkened spots flake off on their own, faster on the face than on the chest or hands. |
| Weeks 1-2 | Spots are visibly lighter. Redness and fine vessels continue to fade. |
| After session 3 | The full result: more even tone, less background redness, fewer visible capillaries. |
An IPL treatment at Call of Beauty starts at $500 for the face. Neck and chest can be added to the same appointment, and arms, hands and legs are priced as their own areas. Because most patients need a series, packages bring the per-session cost down.
| Feature | Single session | Series of 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Face | $500 | $1,200 ($400 per session) |
| Face + Neck | $650 | $1,950, with Chest included free |
| Chest (add-on) | +$200 | Free with the Face + Neck series |
| Arms & Hands | $650 | Ask about a series |
| Full Legs | $900 | Ask about a series |
| Add LaseMD to an IPL visit | +$200 | Per area |
The Face + Neck series is the best value for anyone with sun damage that runs below the jawline: three sessions of face and neck with the chest included free, a $600 value. Nationally, IPL treatments generally run from about $300 to $600 per session, depending on the area and the device.
IPL vs BBL: BBL (BroadBand Light) is Sciton's brand name for its intense pulsed light device. A BBL treatment and an IPL treatment are the same category of treatment: filtered broadband light aimed at pigment and vessels. The differences are in the filters and pulse delivery of each device, not the principle. There is no head-to-head trial showing one brand clears spots better than the other.
IPL vs LaseMD: LaseMD is a 1927 nm fractional laser that targets water, not pigment. It treats texture, fine lines, diffuse dullness and melasma, and it's the safer choice for deeper skin tones. IPL is better for redness, visible vessels and discrete brown spots.
Doing both: many patients have spots and redness plus texture. LaseMD can be added to an IPL appointment for $200, or the two can be alternated across a series.
Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day. IPL clears the spots you have, but the sun will make new ones.
Complete the full series. Each session lightens what's left, and older, darker spots take all three.
Plan one or two maintenance sessions a year. Fall is ideal, after the summer's exposure and before next year's.
Add a vitamin C serum in the morning and a retinoid at night between sessions, once your skin has healed.
Keep rosacea triggers in mind. IPL calms redness, but heat, alcohol and spicy food can still bring flushing back.
In California, IPL is a medical procedure. The Medical Board of California allows it to be performed only by a physician, or by a registered nurse, nurse practitioner or physician assistant under a physician's supervision. At Call of Beauty, IPL is performed by our registered nurses, Olga Brener, R.N. and Jordanne Jordan, R.N., under the supervision of our medical director, Dr. Marguerite Bernett, M.D.
Before your first session we review your skin type, recent sun exposure, medications and treatment history, and we start with conservative settings. Every patient wears protective eyewear during treatment.
Call of Beauty is at 90 N Coast Hwy 101, Suite 207 in Encinitas, a few blocks from Moonlight Beach with easy access from I-5. IPL appointments are short enough to fit into a lunch break, and most patients go straight back to their day.
Solana Beach and Cardiff patients are five minutes or less down the 101. Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe are 12 to 15 minutes away, and Carlsbad is about 8 minutes north. For anyone who surfs, sails, golfs or simply walks the coast, the neck, chest and hands carry as much sun damage as the face, and they can be treated in the same visit.
Most patients plan a series of three, about four weeks apart. Fine freckles and light redness may respond in one or two sessions; older, darker spots, rosacea and body areas usually need the full series or more. After that, one or two maintenance sessions a year keeps new sun damage from building up.
It feels like a quick, warm snap against the skin, often compared to a rubber band. The Stellar M22's cooled light guide makes it more comfortable, and most patients don't need numbing cream. The jawline and upper lip are usually the most sensitive.
Very little. Skin is pink for a few hours to two days. Brown spots darken and flake over 7-10 days, which can be covered with makeup from the next day. Most people return to work the same day.
IPL is one of the treatments the American Academy of Dermatology lists for rosacea redness, flushing and visible vessels. It doesn't cure rosacea, so results are maintained with periodic sessions and trigger management. A 2024 randomized trial found the Stellar M22's rosacea filters comparable to pulsed dye laser.
No. A laser emits a single wavelength. IPL emits a broad range of light that is narrowed with filters, which is why it can treat brown and red concerns in the same session. Lasers are more precise for a single target; IPL is broader.
